2016 Estate Grüner Veltliner
Our estate Grüner Veltliner was the first Grüner to be planted in Sonoma and is the result of a collaborative effort that truly pushes the possibilities of Sonoma County wine. Surveying a block of hand-built rock terraces etched into the land by our vineyard's founder, David Steiner, our vineyard manager, Chris Bowland, recalled pictures of stone-terraced plantings along the Danube River in Austria. Austria is the home of this variety, which is known to produce some of the most thrilling white wines in the world. Consulting his friend Mike Officer, the highly respected winemaker of Carlisle and admitted Grüner fanatic, Chris raised the notion of planting a block of the coveted Austrian grape here in Sonoma. Mike's answer? A resounding "Yes, please!!!"
The next step was for Chris and Mike to talk us into the project. When two of the most talented wine professionals in Sonoma approach you with an idea, you take it seriously. One shared dinner, paired with some of the best Grüners from Austria, and we were sold. Our journey as the first to grow Grüner Veltliner in Sonoma County had begun.
What we love about Grüner Veltliner, especially those Austrian examples that reach the riper, or Smargd classification, is how much depth and complexity they can achieve. This wine matches that profile. A kaleidoscope of aroma and flavor held in focus by a proper core of acidity, this wine evolves as you taste it. As expected from a Grüner, this is a very versatile food wine that can pair with both light and heavier cuisine. Our foray into the Grüner Veltliner universe has been very well received, and we are very proud to produce this wine. We will be striving to produce this varietal's California benchmark for years to come.
