These dried speckled blue/gray/purple peas have a dark, rich and nutty taste.



The dried peas (Vigna unguiculate) we grow can be called many names – field peas, cowpeas or Southern peas. They are an important crop throughout Africa and Asia, and many varieties arrived in North America from West Africa via the slave trade. Popularly served with greens, pork, rice and cornbread, these peas have become integral to the traditional cuisine of the southern United States. Peas are a great source of protein, minerals and vitamins and they grow well with limited water and in marginal soils. Despite their impressive nutritional and agroecological qualities, the diversity of pea varieties is widely unknown in the US outside of the South, except for black-eyed peas. Enjoy these peas in a stew, soup, casserole or curry… and serve with cornbread made from our Floriani Red Flint corn!
